Public Outrage Grows as Protesting MBBS Interns Block Bhopal Roads Over 110% Stipend Hike Demand

BHOPAL. A major traffic crisis and public backlash have erupted in Bhopal after MBBS students, demanding a 110% increase in their internship allowance, illegally occupied several key roads starting at 5:00 PM on September 8, 2026. The ongoing blockade, which has extended for over 40 hours, has caused severe distress to lakhs of local residents and commuters.

The unrest triggered intense discussions across local WhatsApp groups late into the night, with viral messages raising sharp ethical questions about whether the protesting students are fit to become doctors. Critics pointed out that Madhya Pradesh is the only state providing ₹65 lakh to ₹75 lakh in government support toward the medical education of each student, making it the highest expenditure on medical training in the country and drawing students from across India and abroad.

Residents expressed deep anger that despite receiving massive financial support from public funds for their studies, the interns (who have not yet completed their degrees or earned their MBBS credentials) are disrupting public life and stepping back from treating poor patients over a one-year stipend demand. On Tuesday, protesters continued to block traffic, stubbornly refusing passage to begging commuters, including a woman seen pleading for a way through. Protesting students maintained that they would keep the roads blocked until all their demands are met.

Local citizens argued that an internship stipend is merely an allowance rather than a fundamental right or a matter of life and death. Emphasizing that public tolerance has run out, residents stated that while they sympathize with student concerns, road blockades will not be tolerated, adding that citizens are ready to assist the police if law enforcement numbers fall short.
