NASA’s Perspective: Wind Erosion and Pareidolia
NASA’s team believes the smooth, metallic-looking object is a natural result of Martian winds. Although winds on Mars are weaker than those on Earth—with a maximum recorded speed of approximately 100 mph, NASA explains that over billions of years, they are capable of carving rocks into bizarre and exotic shapes.
The agency attributes the resemblance to everyday objects to a psychological phenomenon called 'pareidolia', where the human brain perceives familiar patterns in random shapes . To support this, NASA pointed to other strange formations previously seen on Mars:
A small "flower" resembling a coral reef.
A stone that looks like an old book with flaked pages.
A formation resembling the face of a bear.
Harvard Scientist Challenges NASA's Claims
Avi Loeb, a renowned astrophysicist from Harvard, strongly disagrees with NASA's assessment. Loeb argues that the object’s surface is unusually smooth and cylindrical with a flat end, which is not typical for natural rock formations. He suggests that the object could actually be "human-made debris" or potentially a piece of alien technology.
Size Dispute and Mission Costs
There is a significant disagreement regarding the physical dimensions of the object:
NASA's Claim: The agency states the object is a mere 1 cm (smaller than a penny) and was photographed from a distance of 13 feet.
Avi Loeb's Estimate: Loeb estimates the object to be approximately 20 cm in size.
The images were captured by the Curiosity Rover, a mission with a total cost of approximately $2.5 billion. In Indian currency, this amounts to roughly ₹21,000 crore (₹210 billion).
