December 8, 2025, New Delhi: Winter season has just begun and IndiGo has cancelled hundreds of flights in the last few days. Airports are crowded, passengers are angry, and tickets are nowhere to be found. In this crisis, Indian Railways has come forward as a saviour and announced 89 special trains (more than 100 trips) across the country starting today for the next three days.
Which zones are running these special trains?
Central Railway is operating 14 special services including Pune–Bengaluru, Pune–Hazrat Nizamuddin, LTT–Madgaon, CSMT–Hazrat Nizamuddin, LTT–Lucknow, Nagpur–CSMT, Gorakhpur–LTT and Bilaspur–LTT.
South Eastern Railway has introduced Santragachi–Yelahanka, Howrah–CSMT and Cherlapalli–Shalimar specials.
South Central Railway ran three special trains today (6 Dec 2025) itself – Cherlapalli–Shalimar, Secunderabad–Chennai Egmore and Hyderabad–LTT.
Eastern Railway is running Howrah–New Delhi and Sealdah–LTT specials.
Western Railway has started Mumbai Central–Bhiwani (bi-weekly), Mumbai Central–Shakur Basti (almost daily) and Bandra Terminus–Durgapura specials.
Additionally, Northern, North Western, North Central, East Central and South East Central Railways have also introduced dozens of one-way and round-trip special trains, especially providing direct connectivity to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Gorakhpur, Patna, Darbhanga, Howrah, Jaipur and Udhampur.

Booking for most trains started on IRCTC website/app from 6 December itself. Many trains are running today and tomorrow, so check availability immediately. General tickets are also available at PRS counters.

IndiGo has cancelled over 400 flights in the last 4–5 days, mainly from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata due to bad weather, fog and some technical issues. While the airline is informing passengers through SMS, many are finding out at the last moment. In such a situation, these railway special trains have become a lifeline for lakhs of travellers.
